Vince “Kazi” McCoy is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, educator, and cultural ambassador whose career reflects a vibrant fusion of Caribbean rhythms and global jazz influences. Born and raised in Antigua and Barbuda, Kazi was immersed in the island’s diverse musical landscape from an early age, developing a deep appreciation for the traditions that would shape his career. A defining chapter in Kazi’s musical journey began when he joined his mentor, the late Statchel Edwards, as a member of the Targets band. This formative experience sparked his lifelong passion for jazz and laid the foundation for his development as a versatile musician. In 1995, Kazi relocated to New York to further formalize his musical education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors and a Master of Arts in Music Education from Hunter College. His technical mastery of the drums and vibraphone was further developed through studies with renowned percussionists Tom Mattioli and the legendary Cindy Blackman Santana. As a performer, Kazi’s versatility spans Reggae, Calypso, Soca, R&B, and Jazz, with the ability to move seamlessly between drums and vocals. Over the course of his career, he has shared the stage with Caribbean icons including Brigadier Jerry, Lukie D, David Rudder, Black Stalin, and King Short Shirt, as well as acclaimed jazz musicians Roland Prince and Valery Ponomarev. He has also toured with reggae legends The Meditations and Antigua and Barbuda’s Reggae Ambassador, Causion. His performances and musicianship can be heard on numerous recordings available across various digital platforms. Beyond the stage, Kazi has become a fixture in Antigua and Barbuda’s prestigious cultural scene, using his musical talents to give back to his community. He has earned recognition from prominent figures for his contributions to charitable causes and is particularly known for organizing and performing in an annual benefit concert supporting St. John Hospice. In 2026, Kazi’s contributions to the Antiguan and Barbudan music industry were recognized with a Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Service to the Music Industry at the Antigua and Barbuda National Music Awards. Today, Kazi continues to balance an active performance career with a distinguished career as an educator. A certified New York State music teacher, he works extensively in educational settings and has collaborated with professors and students at institutions including Hunter College, York College, and Adelphi University. Through both performance and education, Kazi continues to bridge Caribbean musical traditions with the broader world of music while inspiring and giving back to the communities he serves.
